The Clivia most people know about is the species Miniata.
5 different Clivia miniata blooming this year. You can see more photos of Miniata in my member photo section (member name - maaogis).
It was actually Clivia nobilis that was first transported from South Africa to England where the species was named for Lady Clive. There are now 6 known species of clivia. 5 of the 6 species have umbels of pendulant florets. Miniata is the only one with the upright lily shaped flowers. Here are 3 photos of the same Clivia nobilis plant taken May 1, May 12, and today May 27, 2009. Each flower is only about 1 inch long, but the collection is awsome, with over 70 flowers in the umbel. It takes 3 to 4 years for a Miniata to bloom from seed. This Nobilis plant is from 8 to 10 years old & this was the first blooming. So take that into consideration if you plan to grow Clivia. I currently have 5 of the 6 species in my collection, and have seen 3 of them bloom.
